A Guided 5-Day Colorado Trail Hiking Adventure with Colorado Mountain Expeditions

Fully Supported Hiking Trip | Colorado Trail Section 7B – Indian Trail Ridge | August 10–15, 2026

Experience a fully supported multi-day hiking adventure on one of the most scenic sections of the Colorado Trail. This guided slackpacking trip traverses the iconic Indian Trail Ridge (Hi-Line Trail) in the San Juan Mountains, featuring high alpine ridgelines, wildflower meadows, and sweeping mountain views—without the burden of carrying a heavy backpack.

What Makes This Colorado Trail Hiking Trip Special

Varied and Scenic Terrain

Hikers will experience a mix of alpine ridgelines, forested trails, and high-country meadows that showcase the dramatic beauty of the San Juan Mountains. This section includes extended above-treeline hiking, expansive vistas, and diverse ecosystems ranging from lush valleys to rugged mountain passes. With full support, hikers can focus on the journey while our crew transports gear between camps.

Hike at Your Own Pace

Hikers move at their own speed throughout the day. A sweep guide stays at the back of the group to provide navigation support, encouragement, and first aid if needed.

Slackpacking for a Better Experience

Hikers carry only the essentials for the day: lunch, snacks, 2–3 liters of water, rain gear, and extra layers. All camping equipment and personal bags are transported between camps by our support crew, allowing you to hike stronger, longer, and more comfortably.

The Hiking Experience

Colorado Trail Section 7B – Indian Trail Ridge

This trip explores one of the most iconic and rewarding sections of the Colorado Trail. Beginning near Molas Pass and ending in Durango, hikers travel through high-country terrain featuring dramatic ridgelines and unforgettable alpine scenery. Each day includes sustained climbs and descents, with hiking distances typically ranging from 10–18 miles depending on the day.

High Alpine Hiking Through Forests and Ridgelines

Experience constantly changing terrain—from shaded forests and subalpine meadows to exposed alpine ridgelines with panoramic views. The highlight is the Indian Trail Ridge traverse, offering miles of above-treeline hiking with 360-degree vistas. This diversity provides a rewarding and immersive experience for strong, adventurous hikers.

Day One… of this section is seventeen miles of hiking at an average elevation of 11,000 feet. Hiking through the San Juan Mountains on this first day will be a day you will always remember and will want to return. It is very comparable to hiking in the Canadian Rockies, but at a much higher altitude. The path upon which this trail travels is very scenic and every turn creates a new view. The first day is very rewarding, but is also the most difficult. You will see some of the most spectacular views of your life including two Fourteener's, Mount Wilson and El Diente, where Navajo Sam once resided.

Day Two… is a day hike allowing the hiker to recover from the first days hike. This is a beautiful hike over Black Hawk Pass.

Day Three… is a 6.3 mile hike. Bring a book to read in camp that afternoon!! You will have lots of time to rest up for the next days hike on the hi-line trail.

Day Four… we have a long hike on the hi-line trail. Hi-line trail name implies exactly what it reads…. hiking on top of a spiny ridge with 360 degree views.
Gudy Gaskill states “From the Hi-line Trail (also know as Indian Trail Ridge), a crest of cascading wildflowers, the views of the Hermosa Valley and the La Plata Mountains are extraordinary.” On this day, the hike will top out at Kennebec Pass. From this point The Colorado Trail begins it greatest descent and altitude change.

Day Five… As you would imagine, this is the day of descent to the end of the trail. By no means is this an easy day. It is near twenty miles long but descending approximately 4500 feet. The trail generally follows the canyon of Junction Creek, winding in and out of the numerous steep side drainages.

Please make your own lodging reservations far in advance for the night before the hike and the last night because Durango will fill up quickly.

After the entire group has finished hiking and is waiting at the end of The Colorado Trail, we will shuttle everyone to their cars.

You should be to your vehicles by 6 pm on the last day. Due to the length of the last days hike and logistical issues, there will only be one shuttle available for the group once everyone is finished at the end of the trail.

In the morning, while you are taking down your tent and packing your gear, we are preparing a wholesome warm breakfast for you.

A variety of fresh lunch items and snacks are put out everyday prior to hiking so you can self-design whatever you want to take with you to eat while hiking.

A community latrine (toilet) is also set up for all hikers and staff. The latrine is screened with tarps to provide privacy. We practice Leave No Trace Principles. Thus, toilet paper is not buried in the latrine. All toilet paper is put in a separate container that is provided at the latrine.
