This trip is designed to combine the highlights of Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park, with guided hikes through scenic desert trails, iconic rock formations, and stunning canyon vistas.

From dramatic sandstone spires and massive arches to panoramic overlooks and quiet desert trails, this adventure showcases the diverse landscapes that make the Moab region one of the world’s most celebrated outdoor destinations. With small-group travel of just 9–12 hikers, you’ll enjoy expert guidance, full support, and the freedom to focus on the experience rather than logistics.

What Makes This Adventure Special

See the Best of Both National Parks

Many visitors to Moab only see one park or only the highlights. On this trip, guests experience multiple districts of Canyonlands—including the Needles and Islands in the Sky—as well as the most iconic areas of Arches. Each hike offers a unique perspective, from hidden desert corridors to expansive canyon views.

Hike Light, Enjoy More

Daily hikes are completed with a light daypack while our guides manage transportation, logistics, and camp setup. This fully supported approach allows you to focus on photography, scenery, and enjoying each hike without the stress of planning or heavy packs.

Comfortable Campsites and Stargazing

Guests camp on scenic Bureau of Land Management lands near the Colorado River and in the Needles area of Canyonlands. These locations provide breathtaking desert landscapes, comfortable camping, and access to some of the darkest skies in the country for stargazing. Evenings are relaxed and social, with fresh breakfasts and dinners prepared by our guides, and packed lunches provided for each day’s hikes. Dietary restrictions are easily accommodated.

Explore Iconic Trails and Hidden Gems

This trip blends must-see highlights like Delicate Arch and Dead Horse Point with quieter, off-the-beaten-path trails such as the Chessler Park Loop in the Needles District. Each hike is chosen to provide variety, challenge, and unforgettable scenery.

The Hiking Experience

Daily hikes typically range from 8–14 miles, with terrain including well-established trails, desert slickrock, and moderate elevation changes. Guides provide detailed interpretation of geology, ecology, and history, ensuring a rich understanding of the region’s landscapes.

Day 1: Meet at a BLM group campsite north of Moab. After introductions, shuttle south to a group campsite just outside the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park.

Day 2: Hike the Chessler Park Loop, famous for towering sandstone spires (“Needles”), narrow canyon corridors, and sweeping desert views. Return to camp for a relaxing evening under the stars.

Day 3: Drive north toward Arches National Park, enjoying shorter hikes to view famous arches and formations. Camp near Moab, then head to Dead Horse Point State Park for a stunning sunset over the Colorado River canyon.

Day 4: Explore the Islands in the Sky District of Canyonlands, completing several hikes with breathtaking canyon overlooks and panoramic vistas.

Day 5: Hike to Delicate Arch, a perfect finale to the trip. Return to vehicles by early afternoon to conclude the adventure.

Daily Schedule and Hiking Overview

Throughout this five-day adventure, guests will explore a wide variety of trails, viewpoints, and iconic landmarks across Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. The itinerary is designed to showcase both well-known highlights and quieter, remote areas that highlight the diversity of the landscape. Moving our camps strategically allows us to maximize time in the parks, especially near the Needles District of Canyonlands, so guests can hike all day in some of the most beautiful and remote terrain in the region.

Daily routes may vary slightly based on weather, trail conditions, and group ability, but the goal remains the same—to provide a safe, rewarding, and memorable hiking experience while exploring the best of the Moab area.

Day 1: Arrival and Scenic Drive to Camp

Trails/Stops:

Hike distance:
No formal hiking today. Guests will enjoy short stops along the scenic drive.

Terrain:
Paved roads with short, easy walking at scenic viewpoints.

Guests meet at the group campsite north of Moab at 2:00 PM to check in, set up tents, and get settled. After a brief orientation and gear check, the group loads into the van and begins a scenic two-hour drive south toward a group campsite just outside the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park.

Setting up camp near the Needles allows us to begin Day 2 early in this stunning, remote section of the park, maximizing time on the trail and minimizing driving. Along the way, we stop at Newspaper Rock, a fascinating rock panel covered in ancient petroglyphs, providing a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural history.

After arriving at camp, guests enjoy dinner and a relaxing evening under the stars.

Trails:

Hike distance:
Approximately 8–12 miles

Terrain:
Desert trails, narrow canyons, rocky surfaces, moderate elevation changes

Day two takes us deep into the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, where the iconic sandstone spires known as “Needles” create a dramatic and otherworldly landscape. Hiking the Chessler Park Loop, guests traverse open desert valleys, narrow canyons, and towering rock formations while enjoying sweeping viewpoints and serene wilderness.

Camping nearby allows us to access this remote area early in the morning, ensuring a full day of hiking without spending time commuting. After returning to camp, guests enjoy dinner and relax under the stars in this pristine desert environment.

Day 3: Devils Garden and Sunset at Dead Horse Point

Trails:

Hike distance:
Approximately 8–12 miles

Terrain:
Slickrock, narrow ridgelines, rocky surfaces, uneven desert terrain

On Day three, guests travel north toward Arches National Park. While our gear is transported to the next campsite, guests explore the Devils Garden area, including iconic sandstone fins and arches. This hike combines adventure with breathtaking scenery, passing notable formations while providing an immersive experience in Arches’ diverse landscape.

In the late afternoon, we arrive at camp near Moab, set up tents, and then head to Dead Horse Point State Park to witness one of the most dramatic sunsets in Utah. The panoramic views over the Colorado River canyon are a highlight of the trip and provide excellent photo opportunities.

Day 4: Canyonlands Islands in the Sky

Trails:

Hike distance:
Approximately 8–12 miles

Terrain:
Well-maintained desert trails, sandy sections, moderate elevation changes, rocky terrain

Day four brings guests to the Islands in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park, offering expansive canyon vistas and unique rock formations. Yes—very common. Across our hiking, biking, and art trips, a large percentage of our guests sign up solo. These experiences are designed to bring together people who share a passion for the outdoors and adventure, so you’ll be joining a group of like-minded individuals from day one. Our guides foster a welcoming, inclusive environment that makes it easy to connect—whether you’re on the trail, or relaxing back at camp.

We also regularly have couples and small groups of friends join our trips, which adds to the overall dynamic and makes each group unique. No matter how people arrive, everyone quickly blends into one cohesive group. There’s no pressure—just a supportive, social atmosphere where you can engage as much or as little as you’d like.

By the end of the week, it’s common for solo travelers to leave with new friendships and future adventure partners. Many guests find that coming alone actually enhances the experience, giving them the opportunity to fully immerse themselves and meet new people along the way.
